Research governance

Two evidence streams. One clinician-led review.

Every integrated report is reviewed by KPCIRC's Molecular Tumour Board, then finalised and signed by the treating oncologist, who keeps clinical ownership of every treatment decision.

How AVATAR findings are reviewed

  1. 1

    OnKommon Interpreter

    Computational evidence

Computational interpretation of tumour alterations and the evidence linked to treatment response.

  2. 2

    AVATAR Discovery Process

    Experimental evidence

Mutation-informed biological modelling and drug screening on the fruit-fly platform.

  3. 3

    OnKommon AVATAR

    Integrated report

Molecular findings, screening observations, limitations and considerations for assessment.

  4. 4

    KPCIRC

    Molecular Tumour Board review

Reviews the findings, their interpretation, clinical context and therapeutic implications.

  5. 5

    Treating oncologist

    Finalisation and signature

Finalises and signs the report, and retains ultimate clinical ownership and responsibility for treatment decisions.

Research governance

Principles

  • Approved protocol

Participation, sample use, consent and eligibility follow the applicable approved research protocol.

  • Consent

Research participation has its own consent process, separate from any clinical testing.

  • Confidentiality first

No patient or confidential project data is exchanged until a confidentiality process and secure channel are in place.

  • Research-use labelling

Every output retains its research-use limitations, including in the integrated report.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is AVATAR a test that tells me which drug will work?
AVATAR is a biological investigational plan. It adds experimental evidence — how the tumour's own drivers respond in a living model — to the molecular interpretation. The treating oncologist weighs it with the clinical evidence and makes every decision.
Which cancers is AVATAR for?
AVATAR is a solid-tumour pathway based on whole-exome sequencing. Eligibility and sample requirements are confirmed with the treating team.
Why use fruit flies?
Drosophila melanogaster has a long history in cancer biology because many core growth and signalling pathways are conserved between flies and humans — and engineered flies can be produced and screened quickly.
How is AVATAR different from Twin?
Twin is the longitudinal, clinician-led model of the cancer journey, with four testing pathways and tracking. AVATAR is a biological investigational plan for solid tumours. Both read the genome through the OnKommon Interpreter and the six shared core layers.
Who reviews AVATAR findings?
Every integrated report is reviewed by KPCIRC's Molecular Tumour Board, then finalised and signed by the treating oncologist, who keeps clinical ownership of every treatment decision.
Can I see example results?
Example reports are shared during a professional demonstration or collaboration discussion.
Which drugs are screened?
The candidate drugs, combinations and methods are defined with each collaborator for the study.
