Cancer Dictionary (A–Z)

Short, human definitions of the terms patients meet.

Sample entries to seed the section:

Term Plain-language meaning
Biomarker A measurable feature of a cancer (often a gene change) that guides treatment choice.
ctDNA Tumour DNA fragments shed into the blood, readable by a liquid biopsy.
Germline Genetic changes you are born with and can pass on — the focus of Heritage.
MRD Molecular residual disease — microscopic cancer left after treatment, found by Clear.
MSI A sign the tumour's DNA-repair is faulty; often predicts immunotherapy response.
Somatic Changes a tumour acquires during life — not inherited.
TMB Tumour mutational burden — how many mutations a tumour carries; can predict immunotherapy benefit.
Targeted therapy A drug aimed at a specific molecular change driving the cancer.
Biomarker Library

One page per major biomarker.

What it is, what it means for treatment, and which OnKommon test reports it. Seed entries:

EGFR
Common driver in lung cancer with several approved targeted therapies.
ALK / ROS1 / RET
Fusion drivers with highly effective targeted drugs.
KRAS
A frequent driver historically hard to target — now with emerging options.
BRCA1/2
DNA-repair genes; can open specific drug classes and signal hereditary risk.
NTRK fusions
Rare but highly actionable across many cancer types.
MSI / MMR
Signs of faulty DNA repair; often predict immunotherapy response.

A note on tone: Resources are written to a sixth-grade reading level, avoid statistics that frighten without context, and always end with a constructive next step — a link to Signal or a consultation. Every article is available in regional languages.
